Your Credit Score Is a Trust Score
Banks use it to decide if they trust you. Landlords use it to decide if they will rent to you. Employers check it. Your credit score is not a number -- it is a reputation.
And you can fix it yourself. For free. No credit repair company needed.
The Five Factors
- Payment History (35%) -- Pay on time. Every. Single. Time. This is the biggest factor. Set up autopay on every account. Never miss a payment.
- Credit Utilization (30%) -- Keep balances below 30% of your limit. Below 10% is even better. If your limit is $5,000, stay under $1,500. Pay it down before the statement closes, not just before the due date.
- Length of History (15%) -- Keep your oldest account open. Do not close old cards even if you do not use them. The age of your accounts matters.
- Credit Mix (10%) -- Having different types of credit (cards, loans, mortgage) helps slightly. Do not open new accounts just for this.
- New Credit (10%) -- Each hard inquiry drops your score 3-7 points. Do not apply for cards you do not need.
The Quick Wins
- Dispute errors: Pull your free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com. Dispute anything wrong. The bureaus have 30 days to respond.
- Ask for a limit increase: Call your card company. Ask for a higher limit. More available credit = lower utilization = higher score. Do not use the extra limit.
- Become an authorized user: If a family member has a card with a long history and low balance, ask to be added. Their history becomes yours.
The Long Game
Credit scores move slowly. But they move. Payment history and utilization are the levers. Pull them consistently and watch your score climb.
